I
am an avid Yellowstone National
Park-lover and photographer. This
summer, despite the pandemic, I
was able to live and work in the park's
gateway city, Gardiner, Montana, so I
could spend more time photographing
wildlife and landscapes in Yellowstone
and Grand Teton national parks. This
particular photo was made during a
weekday evening in September when
I made a quick run to Lamar Valley
searching for wildlife after finishing my
job earlier in the day. Lamar turned out
fairly uneventful other than the usual
bison and a small group of pronghorn,
so I decided to return home before it got
too dark. I had just gotten to the top of
the hill west of Roosevelt/Tower Junction
when I rounded the corner and saw what
I immediately recognized was a moment I
needed to capture: the large, red-orange
sun just starting to set behind a hill of
trees near the Petrified Tree turnoff. I
slammed on my brakes (making sure
nobody was behind me) and quickly
pulled off the road. I hastily grabbed
my camera and telephoto lens, rested
it on the top of my car door and began
snapping away until the sun set behind
the trees. The colors and glow of the
sun in this photo were due to the west
coast wildfires California and Oregon
exhibited this summer, as well as nearby
fires in Idaho, Wyoming and Montana.
When paired with the sun at the right
time, however, the smoke made for some
amazing, colorful and intense sunsets,
and this photo is evidence of that.
