benefiting from wildlife tourism giving
back to wildlife could become a template
for strengthening and diversifying funding
for wildlife everywhere. After many phone
calls, creative ideas, back-and-forths, encouragement
and camaraderie, Phillips' Wildlife
Tourism for Tomorrow initiative was born.
If every business that makes money from
tourism gives back just a portion, the results
will be phenomenal. The WYldlife Fund is
the perfect vehicle to accept the funds that
Wildlife Tourism for Tomorrow generates,
and all of those funds will go to projects
participating businesses can choose from on
the Wildlife Tourism for Tomorrow webpage.
The beauty of this effort is that it is in real
time. As the money is given, the projects
can proceed and successes can be witnessed.
As everyone loaded into the sparkling-clean
vans to venture on the viewing
tour, the guides chatted with the group. They
were knowledgeable, witty and full of passion
and expectation for what would be seen on
the trip through Grand Teton National Park.
As the scenery came into view heading north,
the conversation relaxed. Despite the masks,
eyes sparkled and let on that happy smiles
were hidden from view. The mountains have
a way of doing that to people.
A tour in April kicked off a new initiative giving businesses benefiting from wildlife tourism a way to donate to conservation.
Wyoming Travel & Tourism reported in 2016 that people who traveled to Teton County in 2016 generated $1.2 billion to the local
economy. (Photo by Taylor Glenn)
