Bryan Anderson, district forester for Wyoming State Forestry Division, measures the circumference of a ponderosa in part of the Wyoming State Trust Land near Laramie as one measurement to
determine the health of a tree. His team is conducting a forest reduction project in this area, and evaluating the health of the trees helps his team determine which trees are removed to maintain the
integrity of the forest. (Photo by Dawn Wilson)
in a similar light, although his interest in
working as a forester was there when he was
a kid in northwest Minnesota.
" I was out in the swamps and woods
all the time growing up and wanted to do
something where I could make a difference, "
Anderson said. " I have now worked for the
State of Wyoming for 30 years where I have
managed state lands for forest health, forest
products and wildlife. "
Although Anderson said juggling all of
the aspects of his job and interests of the
forest is tough, he loves the cooperation of
a lot of people, including those in federal
agencies and the local landowners, and
helping the land get back to or staying
healthy.
" The job is very rewarding, and you meet
many great people, " Anderson said. " Be
willing to move a lot with seasonal jobs at
first to get experience and complete at least
a bachelor's degree in forestry. The jobs are
there if you are willing to get the experience. "
If interested in being a forester, get
a degree in forestry or natural resources.
Taking seasonal summer jobs as a wildland
firefighter, which requires minimal training
and experience, can help pay for college while
providing valuable knowledge. Permanent
jobs are hard to come by so put the time in
and be flexible with opportunities.
" I applied to 450 jobs after college even
with experience as a volunteer firefighter
and EMT, " Schultz said. " Don't let rejection
discourage you. "
Many agencies on the federal, state,
and local levels hire seasonal fire crews.
Positions may include forestry technician,
range technician or wildland firefighter.
Working for private wildland fire contractors
is another route. Summer positions are
typically posted in September, October and
November.
Beyond a love for the outdoors, all of
these passionate outdoors-people had
another common theme when talking about
their job - they truly loved their work.
