Family trifecta
By Robert Gagliardi, associate editor
There are mountains in the background.
A small creek meanders through a lush,
green valley and a plethora of wildflowers
are abundant in the foreground. It's not
uncommon to see deer, even an occasional
moose.
This could be numerous places in
Wyoming, and based on that brief
snapshot, a place one would want to visit
as much as possible.
For me, the beauty is an added bonus.
More importantly it's a chance to visit
family.
This area overlooks the LaBarge
Meadows along the upper stretches of
LaBarge Creek in the Wyoming Range. It
was one of my grandfather's favorite fishing
spots. In fact, he was fishing there when a
friend drove nearly 90 miles to tell him I
was born. To honor him after he passed, I
spread some of his ashes overlooking one
of his favorite fishing holes.
My mother wasn't big into the outdoors
but she liked it, especially this particular
spot. There is a U.S. Forest Service guard
station cabin at LaBarge Meadows, and
one summer my grandfather stayed there
to help watch for forest fires. My mom
told me of a time when she and my dad
stayed the night there and she was scared
to death because - in her words - " it
got so dark at night. " Despite that fear,
the LaBarge Meadows was special to her.

My mom died unexpectedly five years
ago, and I did the same thing with some
of her ashes - because she liked the area
and also to reunite her with her dad.
That doubled my reasoning to return.
When the first dog of my adult life
passed three years ago, a golden retriever
named Snyder, I made it a family trifecta
by spreading some of his ashes there
- a place he slogged around with me
while I fished. I should say tried to fish
because keeping a golden retriever out
of the water is tough. My grandpa loved
dogs, and Snyder was the grandchild my
mom never had.
It is bitter-sweet to go see them. Bitter
because they're gone and I miss them.
Sweet because I crack open a beer, tell
them what's been going on with me and
soak in the scenery. To say some tears
aren't shed would be a lie, but they're
worth it to be closer to three family
members who - in all three cases -
were taken too soon.
This spot has always been beautiful,
but recently it seems like their presence
has made a difference. The wildflowers
appear more plentiful, the grass near the
creek seems greener. Last year during
late-summer when everything started
to dry out, this area bursted with color.
I hope grandpa, mom and Snyder
enjoy their spot. It's not the same as
having them here, but it is the next
best thing.
