A fly angler works with his line as he fishes on the Greys River.
it flows into the Snake, the water bottlenecks
into a narrow corridor. Here, the journey of
the Greys River from headwater to tailwater
reaches its climax which manifests as a deep
and fast-moving section that is rapids-like.
The Greys then forms a wide, slow-moving
waterway as it meets the Snake River
in Alpine.
I tried my best to capture the aura of the
Greys River with my camera, but it doesn't
come close to replicating the feeling of
exploring and fishing this river for yourself.
Whether you're on a camping trip with
friends and family or on a solo expedition
to catch cutthroat, the 60 miles of dirt road
allows ample space for anyone who travels
here to spread out and enjoy the scenery and
ambiance. The corridor has many campsites
along the road, ones with water and toilets
that are $10 a night, as well as free, dispersed
camping spots without these luxuries. I went
to the Greys at arguably one of the busiest
times of the year and only saw a few campers
and anglers.
In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic and
civil unrest consumed the country, public
lands in the United States saw record numbers
of visitors. This explosion of nature
seekers shows the importance of the wild

A Snake River cutthroat took the author's sinking stonefly.
The Greys River corridor has 82 hiking trails
totaling 450.9 miles to explore and enjoy. I only
hiked a few shorter routes but saw deer, eagles and
many small mammals including ground squirrels,
chipmunks and muskrats.
