a few of his or her own, who enjoys sleeping
under the stars and can handle - and even
adore - miles and miles of lonely highway.
A good cell phone is handy, but it should
remain in the glove box. Too much has been
lost by our uncivil civilization that interacts
only with a hand-held device rather than one
of flesh and blood, that looks to a palm for
answers rather than the horizon, that misses
life going by bending to and squinting at a
screen. There is some good to be found here
- like the fantastic maps one can download
to a phone - but hopefully you'll be out of

range of any cell tower and out in the big
empty with just a vague notion of where
you are going.
Take good coffee and a small camping
stove. A recent best Christmas present is a
small hand-held grinder for a roadside hot
beverage.
Go slowly. Top down if you have that
option. Know a bit about the country, the
land, who was here and when. A good night
book, like McPhee's " Rising from the Plains "
will put you in touch with Wyoming legends
like David Love while giving you an idea of

what you are seeing.
Take a few pictures if you want, but your
brain will do it for you. The road is the thing
and it is to be loved and remembered.
- A lonely country road leads from Tom Reed's ranch
to miles and miles of wide open begging to be explored.
You can buy his books, including Give Me Mountains
For My Horses, in the Game and Fish Store.
- Lori Eslick is an illustrator, artist, presenter, children's
picture book illustrator, author and workshop leader.
She regularly creates illustrations for Wyoming Wildlife
magazine's Wild Country Dispatch column. More of
her work can be seen at eslickart.com.
