The Wallace
Hartley Titanic
Violin sold at
auction in 2013
for $1.7 million.

Baseball has one. Rock and roll has one. And
although it took millions of years, the earth has
one, too. And with well-lit, well-paved walkways
stretching throughout, you can easily stroll
through rooms 10 stories high, marvel at the
enormous columns and crystal-clear pools,
and of course, hear the world's largest musical
instrument, the Great Stalacpipe Organ.
It's time to discover the most cavernous caverns
on the East Coast. It's time to discover Luray.

The long-anticipated arrival of the rarest of all Titanic artifacts, bandmaster Wallace
Hartley's famed violin will have its once-in-a-lifetime world reveal at the Titanic Museum
Attraction in Branson from January through June 15, 2020 (it will be on display in Pigeon
Forge, Tenn., from July 1-December 2020). This is the actual violin on which Hartley
played a soulful overture to the tragic human drama unfolding around him.
Wallace Hartley was a young English violinist who had just been appointed bandmaster of the Titanic's orchestra. Traveling with him was the violin that his fiancée, Maria
Robinson, had given him on the occasion of their engagement. They were to be married
upon his return to England.
For four magical days, Hartley and his band members spread joy throughout the ship
with spirited renditions of the popular tunes of the day. Approaching midnight on the
fourth night, joy turned to panic when an iceberg opened the ship's starboard side and
seawater poured in.
For the next two hours, the Titanic band took position on deck and played as the ship
slowly sank. Survivors said they saw Hartley at the stern railing just as the ship went
under. When the recovery ship pulled his body from the sea, his beloved violin was still
strapped to him. The violin was then lost for almost a century, hidden away in an attic.
"Visitors to the Titanic Museum Attraction should be prepared for an emotionally
charged encounter when they first see the iconic Wallace Hartley Titanic violin," says
Titanic Museum Attraction co-owner Mary Kellogg-Joslyn.
