Community and Diversity

For those organizations that may not serve the populations that
are most affected by the pandemic, this is a great opportunity to
be creative and see how you may temporarily alter some of your
processes to help support the community.

They quickly put us in touch with dozens of community
members-from pandemic child care center operators
to frontline workers who were balancing the critical
need for a paycheck with their family's safety. We
spent hours on calls with seniors who told us about
the lack of produce in daily meal deliveries, to business
owners trying to navigate Paycheck Protection
Program loans and salvage their staff.
The Women's Fund of The Greater Cincinnati
Foundation had to collaborate and take action.
We joined forces with our parent organization,
Greater Cincinnati Foundation, the United Way and
other local funders to create the COVID-19 Regional
Response Fund. The fund quickly raised more than $7
million to be distributed rapidly to the community. A
normal grant process, filled with character counts and
theories of change, was obliterated. We decided to
reach out to organizations on the front lines and asked
what they needed to meet the challenges they were
facing and then funded them, often wiring money to
them within a day.
Domestic violence partners quickly realized the
limitations of hotlines when abusers and victims were
sheltered in place together. Rapid funding allowed for
the quick development of a texting service.
Homeless organizations feared the virus would
spread like wildfire in encampments. Funding helped
them to relocate people to hotels.
Refugee-serving organizations knew that their
clients could not access testing sites, food banks or
education-support services because of language and
cultural barriers. Within a week, native-speaking
community navigators were hired to help connect
vulnerable families to life-saving services.

Funding was swift and proactive and had very few
strings attached. The trust was there and had been
built through people and missions over the years.
Because of that trust, collaborative spirit and
willingness to listen we could support and strengthen
our community while positively positioning our
mission. Our fundraising revenue has been impacted
(no fundraising events, a shift in grant purposes and
changes in the foundation's areas of support); but, not
as much as it could have been if we hadn't been part
of the movement to build community. Below are some
suggestions for how you, as a fundraiser or nonprofit
leader, can help build and support community:

1. THINK ABOUT WAYS YOU CAN
HELP RIGHT NOW (INDIVIDUALLY
OR THROUGH COLLABORATION)
The pandemic is happening right now. Change is
happening right now. People's lives are being impacted
right now. For those organizations that may not
serve the populations that are most affected by the
pandemic, this is a great opportunity to be creative
and see how you may temporarily alter some of your
processes to help support the community.
Across many cities, specialists who work with
children with disabilities have lost their jobs
due to budgetary concerns or social distancing
accommodations. An organization that provides a play
space for these children may consider transforming it
into a learning center for these children.
Additionally, many parents decided to teach their
kids virtually but cannot provide the appropriate
accommodations for a proper learning environment

We are all experiencing change together at the same time.
