Community and Diversity

position quickly filled by fellow young professional and
co-leader of the chapter's LGBTQ+ Affinity Group, Luis
Ramirez. He is leading a growing volunteer committee
within the chapter to look at, through the IDEA lens,
every aspect of how we serve our members and
community. We recognize that we have work to do
internally as a chapter, but we know that committing to
the values of IDEA and acting on them creates impact
across the fundraising sector.
However, to make that happen, we must encourage
conversations at every level and across every aspect of
our organizations-and we need to stand ready to take
meaningful action to implement change.
I encourage leaders across the fundraising sector to
invite as many people as possible to the conversation.
Recognize that young professionals in your organization
have a lot to share about their experiences, and support
them by taking action together.

Excited might be the wrong
word to describe how I've felt
in recent months watching new
and reenergized conversations
happening across organizations
and associations around diversity,
equity and inclusion. Most of all, I
feel eager-eager for meaningful
dialogue, action and change. I
graduated from college in 2014. During my last few
years as a student leader in the LGBTQ+ community,
I was invited to participate in a diversity task force
that examined the university's equity issues. While I
graduated before I could see anything implemented, in
recent months, I've been thinking about how other young
professional fundraisers have been part of committees,
dialogues and initiatives centered around inclusion,
diversity, equity and access for years. As we've begun
to enter the workforce, we've joined organizations to
continue to address these topics. In many cases, though,
I've seen the burden of creating dialogue fall on the
shoulders of those most impacted and marginalized.
If you asked me what I was most excited about right
now, it is that the AFP DC, Washington DC Metro Area
Chapter furthered our commitment to IDEA in January
by creating a vice president of IDEA on our board, a
