to expand our programs and solidify our values, investing
in Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) leaders
through our growing IDEA efforts, and we are focused on
building a more robust public policy initiative.

Tells us a little about what your chapter represents?

T

he nonprofit and philanthropy sectors, like much of
the world, has had a challenging year. With COVID-19
impacting our health and economy, the fundraising sector
has had to increase efforts to respond to the communities
they serve-sometimes with fewer resources. Then,
as we worked to respond to this unprecedented crisis,
social justice protests erupted across the country, forcing
organizations to address issues of racism and bias and
develop actionable diversity and inclusion plans. We
recently spoke to AFP MN, Minnesota Chapter PresidentElect Michelle Edgarton to learn more about how they are
responding to the ongoing crises, the chapter's core values
and plans for the future.

When was the chapter established and how many
members does it have?
The AFP MN, Minnesota Chapter was established in 1970,
and this year we are celebrating our 50th anniversary. We
started this year with 397 members. As of September, due to
the COVID-19 crisis, we are at 300 members.

Our chapter represents our core values of trust, equity,
responsibility and collaboration.
We seek to create environments that allow us to bring our
authentic selves together to share, collaborate and learn. We
are an association committed to seeing and recognizing each
other and listening and responding to our communities. In
doing so, we seek to build a foundation of trust and respect,
supported by transparency and ethical behavior.
We understand that racism is systemic, and if we want
to eliminate it, we need to take systemic actions. We are
committed to diversifying representation in our field and
building power and agency for BIPOC fundraisers to have an
equal seat at the table and guide all aspects of AFP's work.
We have a responsibility to the larger nonprofit
community, and we own our power and ability as a
membership organization of fundraisers to ensure a strong
and vital field.
We provide a collaborative platform to bridge and grow
relationships by sharing our unique experiences and expertise,
helping people feel included, and creating opportunities for
new and diverse voices to emerge.

After the death of George Floyd, protests erupted
in Minneapolis. It also sparked a larger conversation
around social justice for Black people and people
of color. What is the Minnesota chapter doing to
address social justice and anti-racism issues in
your region?
We were shocked and horrified at the murder of George Floyd
at the hands of the Minneapolis police. As the Minnesota
chapter, we quickly made a commitment to action and began
identifying how we could support the many nonprofits and
community groups working on the ground to respond.

How has your chapter expanded over the years?

How does the chapter advance the principles
of IDEA?

We have continually grown over the past 10 years, reaching
over 400 members in 2019. While COVID-19 has caused
a decline, we are excited about what's to come. In addition
to membership growth, AFP Minnesota has continued

We seek to be a chapter represented by our community's rich
array of experiences and cultures that ensure engagement,
equitable representation, and meaningful participation in
leadership at all levels of the organization.
