Ethics

Tainted Donors:
Know When to
Say "No"
By Michael Nilsen

I

n this Q&A, Advancing Philanthropy sat down
with Joyce Mitchell-Antoine, vice president for
development at Planned Parenthood South Atlantic
and AFP Ethics Committee member. After almost 30
years as a fundraiser-22 of which has been at Planned
Parenthood-Mitchell-Antoine has gained extensive
knowledge of ethical fundraising principles and best
practices related to the AFP Code of Ethical Standards. In
this article, she discusses the importance of implementing
procedural processes to avoid accepting money from
tainted donors. She also explores why asking the right
questions and engaging in effective relationship-building
are critical steps to help you avoid accepting donations
from individuals and corporations that do not align with
your organization's mission or have the potential to cause
harm to the communities you serve.

(Michael Nilsen) What is it like serving on the ethics
committee? Some members might think of it as this
austere group of judgment, where you're passing
down laws and edicts, but what's it actually like to
serve on the committee?
I have viewed the ethics committee as a very esteemed
group because, over the years, as I've looked at their
work, there have been so many wonderful colleagues and
people in fundraising whom I greatly respect that have
served on this committee. I don't know if I thought there
was some mysticism around this group, but what I can say
is that since January, it's been great to hear some of the
thoughtful comments from fundraising leaders-people
who I respect.

Why did you want to serve on the Ethics
Committee? Why has ethics been important to you?
When you have been in fundraising as long as I have,
and seen as many things as I have, you develop a
unique perspective, especially when you work with an
organization like Planned Parenthood. I have knowledge
about fundraising and ethics that I'd like to share. But,
stepping outside of my own experiences, I've always
believed strongly in serving this profession. Serving the
profession is not just being a fundraiser or going out and
asking for money. It's also about helping to ensure other
fundraisers have the information and resources they
need to be not only effective, but also to be proud and
ethical professionals.

Joyce Mitchell-Antoine
