Direction 36 Group as one of its area's healthiest employers. Arpin conducts annual screenings and wellness clinics to assess biometrics, such as blood pressure and glucose levels. All of the initiatives are designed to identify the early onset of health issues and stress factors so that employees can seek care and advice before they develop serious health problems. Whenever drivers are in West Warwick, they are welcome to use the company's free, state-of-the-art wellness center. Workout equipment includes weights, treadmills, stationary bikes, an elliptical trainer and a rower. Recognizing that its owneroperators spend the vast majority of their time on the road, Dolan says that some of them rely on wearable devices or phone apps that measure their movements and quality of sleep. At Sterling, Va.-based JK Moving Services, team members can take free fitness classes on site or join a Weight Watchers program at work. The company offers the programs, said founder and chief executive officer Chuck Kuhn, because unhealthy drivers affect their own personal safety and wellbeing and the quality of service they provide the customer. JK Moving Services hosts an annual biometric health screening that measures blood pressure, glucose Untreated Sleep Apnea Serious for Drivers Truck Crashes," used data from the first large-scale employer-mandated program to screen, diagnose and monitor obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) treatment adherence in the U.S. trucking industry. Drivers with untreated sleep apnea were discharged or quickly quit their jobs, the study found. They were retained on the job only a third as long as other drivers. "Thus, the mandated program removed risky non-treatment-adherent drivers and retained adherent drivers," a summary of the study noted. "Current regulations allow nonadherent OSA cases to drive at another firm by keeping their diagnosis private." Robert Rosenberg, a board-certified sleep medicine physician and author of the upcoming book The Doctor's Guide to Sleep Solutions for Stress & Anxiety (October 2016), The National Sleep Foundation says more than 18 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea and that it increases the risk of drowsy driving. A truck driver with untreated sleep apnea is five times as likely to have an accident as one who is receiving treatment for sleep apnea, according to a study published in May 2016 in Sleep, the journal of the Sleep Research Society. The study, titled "Nonadherence With Employer-Mandated Sleep Apnea Treatment and Increased Risk of Serious levels, body mass index and more, at no cost to the drivers. They also schedule free annual flu shots and vision screenings. Kuhn says they've also been successful with a stop-smoking pledge. Smokers sign the pledge committing to stop smoking and turn in all their tobacco products. If they uphold the pledge, they can win prizes such as lottery tickets or gift cards. "We feel this motivates them to improve their health," Kuhn said. GOING FOR GOLD Olympia Moving in Boston used this year's Summer Olympics to motivate their drivers to stay in shape, said Ned Flint, Olympia's executive vice president for human resources, recruiting, training and safety. That included a 5K running challenge at its Virginia and Massachusetts locations. Team members reported their times for the course and then were ranked to see who had the fastest time. Olympia also has a mock house in Mansfield, Mass., where the company teaches its crews padding, packing, loading and proper lifting. Racing factors in there, too, with a "Book Box Challenge." The movers are offers these suggestions on how to recognize this common sleep problem. Drivers with one or more of the following symptoms should contact their physician or a sleep specialist: * Loud snoring. * Spouse notes that mate stops breathing while sleeping. * Frequent urination during the night, but not during the day. * Headaches upon awakening on a regular basis. * Sleepy and fatigued during the day. * Difficulty controlling blood pressure. * Recently diagnosed with diabetes. "This sleep disorder is treatable, with good results," Rosenberg said. - H.L.
