SEPTEMBER | OCTOBER 2016 a business impact analysis (BIA) will help you identify the key elements of your moving business that must be up and running the same day that a disaster or business interruption occurs. The emphasis at every moving company is a little different. A BIA will help you figure out what your plan should be in the event of a disaster or business interruption-and which elements of the business should be areas of concentration the day of the disaster. Is it IT systems? Communications? Trucks? Alternate facilities to which you can move storage vaults if a flood is imminent? Here are some tips from CSOonline.com, an information source for chief security officers, who are typically responsible for disaster recovery and business continuity plans at larger companies: * Develop and practice a contingency plan that includes a succession plan for your chief executive officer. * Cross-train employees to perform emergency tasks in case those primarily responsible are unavailable. * Determine off-site crisis meeting places and crisis communication plans for top executives. * Practice crisis communication with employees, customers and the outside world. * Invest in an alternate means of communication in case the phone networks go down. * Make sure that all employees, as well as executives, are involved in the exercises so that they get practice in responding to an emergency. * Form partnerships with local emergency response groups-firefighters, police and emergency medical technicians-to establish a good working relationship. Let them become familiar with your company and site. * Evaluate your company's performance during each test, and work toward constant improvement. Continuity exercises should reveal weaknesses. * Test your continuity plan regularly to reveal and accommodate 41 Direction W hen Hurricane Sandy finally subsided in the first week of November 2012, the devastation left in its wake seemed like a terrible nightmare. But for many moving companies throughout New Jersey, New York and along the Eastern Seaboard, it was a more than a bad dream. It could have put them out of business. Having disaster recovery and continuity plans to ensure business can pick up after the storm-or whatever disaster might occur-is critical for any company. But moving companies are particularly vulnerable; their customers' entire lives are on trucks, in storage or scheduled for service. It's never fun to think about the worst-case scenarios. But making an effort to ensure you've got some basic plans in place could save your business. The time to make those plans is long before a disaster strikes. To start, let's define the terms "disaster recovery" and "business continuity." At the most basic level, disaster recovery is simply the process a company employs to resume operations after an event that interrupts its ability to do business. Hurricanes, earthquakes and terrorism are obvious examples, but a "disaster" can be as simple as a power outage. A business continuity plan is a more global approach to operating your business after the interruption occurs. Specifically, a business continuity plan provides a clear path to how your business will continue to make money while things get back to normal. These two terms are often discussed in conjunction with each other as part of a comprehensive approach. The details of what you include in your disaster recovery and business continuity plans will depend on your individual business. There are some basics that all plans should cover, however, whether you are in the moving industry or own a coffee shop. You can't wake up tomorrow and feel comfortable that a plan has covered everything necessary without some serious thought and analysis. Doing http://www.CSOonline.com
