HOME RENTALS ARE RISING. WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR MOVERS?

Ever since the financial crisis of a
decade ago, there's been a notable shift
in the housing market: Single-family
rentals-including detached houses
and townhouses-are the fastest-growing segment of the market, outpacing
single-family home purchases and
apartment rentals, according to the
Urban Institute and a recent Credit.
com article.
This movement can be traced to
the recession, when large investors
purchased low-priced homes and
transformed them into cash-yielding
rentals. Today, single-family rentals
account for 35 percent of the 44 million rental units in the U.S., compared
to 31 percent in 2006. Additionally,
single-family rentals have increased 30
percent over the last three years.
It's no secret that renters are
typically less likely to use a full-service
professional mover than homeowners.
Because they tend to move more often,
renters simply have fewer possessions.
Renting is also associated with less
wealth overall. That's bad for the
moving industry, right?
Not necessarily. Instead, there might
be significant opportunities that have
yet to be explored. Maybe there are
ways to cater to the growing rental market-services that professional movers
can offer that will fit renters' needs and

budgets and get moving companies a
foot in the door to a new customer base.
It means reaching out and convincing
all markets of how professional moving
services can be right for them.
Take millennials, for example. A
recent National Association of Realtors
study reveals that millennials represent
34 percent of people who moved in
2016. As they grow families, millennials are leaving city life for the suburbs.
At the same time, this generation
carries the burden of heavy student
loans and stagnant incomes. Paired
with the not-so-distant memory of
the housing bubble, it's clear why this
generation is either unable or reluctant
to purchase a house.
While millennials are leading the
trend toward single-family rentals,
older Americans are also increasingly
interested in rentals. RENTCafé
reports that the number of renters
over 55 years old has increased by 28
percent between 2009 and 2015. Many
in this group would rather rent homes
than apartments.
Both of these groups could benefit
from professional movers, given
the chance.
As philosopher and statesman Sir
Francis Bacon once said, "Knowledge
is power." Take this information and
make it part of your business plan. n
