o now I'm the new guy. I'm
pleased to join AMSA after
nearly 10 years on Capitol Hill,
where it was my honor to serve
as Congressman Don Young's senior
policy adviser on transportation, infrastructure and labor issues. As a former
chair and senior member of the House
Transportation and Infrastructure
Committee, Rep. Young gave me the
opportunity to play a role in shaping
how Congress addressed all transportation modes and related industries.
According to some public perceptions, Congress is frequently where
good ideas go to die and bad ideas go
to thrive. Today, it's rare for business
owners to be optimistic that lawmakers will deliver the stewardship and
reforms that our industry needs to
grow. But there are those in Congress
who were self-made businesspeople
in their former lives, who hear those
concerns and do their utmost to ensure
our industry is defended by federal law.
My former boss instilled in me a
clear understanding that the government is supposed to help businesses
thrive and provide opportunities for
new enterprises to succeed. His orders
were clear: Wherever and whenever
the government loses that focus, we
must be there to forcefully remind
them who they serve-job creators
like you in the moving industry!
My mission at AMSA remains the
same. I am excited to see that a clear
majority of our industry adheres to

the same playbook and expectation
of how the government should serve
us. Few consumers understand and
appreciate how difficult it is for businesses to operate in our industry. Yet,
moving and storage companies have
distinguished themselves as doers and
producers. They are a vital resource
to help families through one of the
most stressful events we all will likely
encounter: moving your life.
I have been given the tall task-yet
distinct privilege-of replacing Dan
Veoni as AMSA's vice president of
government relations. My team and I
are hard at work lobbying lawmakers
and federal regulators to ensure our
membership is heard loud and clear.
We are meeting with representatives
and senators to advance a variety of
legislative priorities, including protecting the moving expense tax deduction,
reforming hours-of-service rules for
movers and protecting consumers'
personally identifiable information.
We are also participating in the
congressionally mandated Household
Goods Consumer Protection
Working Group, in concert with the
FMCSA, to produce a robust report
on the needed reforms to burdensome
or unnecessary regulations so we
can better protect consumers from
rogue operators and help our industry
provide the best service possible.
I look forward to serving you in my
new role, and I remain excited about
what the future holds for movers! n
