Making the Time for Strategic Planning

ow that summer is over,
I'm sure many of you are
taking a break from the
day-to-day grind of the
busy season and giving some thought
to strategic planning. It is important to
step back every so often to consider the
big picture and what you are hoping to
accomplish with your business.
Do you need to change anything to
address issues that came up during the
summer peak season? Often, times of
stress will reveal weaknesses in your
operation that need to be addressed.
Now is the time to start applying the
lessons you learned this summer and
correct any issues that arose.
Have you checked in with your
clients to ensure their satisfaction
with how the summer went? You
might learn about something that was
glossed over in the heat of the battle,
but is now starting to cause concern.
It's good to show clients that you care
about them and that you want to make
sure you are meeting their needs.
What about your vendors? Did they
come through when needed? If so, a
simple thank-you can help ensure a
continued relationship and reinforce
customer service's importance to you.
If you need to replace a vendor, or
you need something new, the fall can
be a good, quiet time to research and
shop. Our ProMover Buyer's Guide on
ProMover.org can help you search for
vendors by category.
You have to rely on a lot of moving
partners to help with long-distance
moves, especially international moves.
Hopefully, these companies served
you well this summer, but if not, you
can find other AMSA members in
our online directory, searchable by
ZIP code. This is also in our website's
members-only section.
Look internally as well. Were you
a good partner to other movers when

they needed help? If you are willing
and able to help others, they are more
likely to return the favor when you
need them. Expectantly, you take care
of their customers as well as your own.
It all comes down to your workers.
Everyone on the staff is responsible for
a portion of the customer experience,
and they can each impact the customer
differently. As I meet with movers
from across the country, they all tell
me that hiring and retaining good
workers is their biggest challenge. This
is not just the case for drivers, but also
in every job throughout the company.
A key tool for retaining workers
can be training and giving them the
opportunity to grow into new roles
within your company if they demonstrate additional skills. As work slows
down through the fall and winter, this
is a great time of year to think about
taking time for additional training to
keep their skills sharp.
AMSA has a lot of training resources
you can tap into by searching our
website, and your van line or state
association may also have good training sessions or materials you can use.
Investing in your workers can show
them you care about them.
Now that you have your own house
in order, it's time to think about how
you can grow your business, whether
by increasing your market share or
by expanding into new lines of work
through diversification. We have some
ideas for you in this issue on growing
your business, so good luck!
