AWARDS Graebel Wins Colorado Business Award ColoradoBIZ magazine has awarded Aurora, Colo.-based Graebel Companies Inc. its Colorado Service Business of the Year award for 2013. According to ColoradoBIZ, 120 Colorado-based companies were considered for the honor. Judging criteria included financial performance and growth, community service operations, timing, sustained excellence, competition within the market and the industry, perseverance and noteworthy achievement.  Other recent honors bestowed on the privately held global mobility company include: first place in HRO Today magazine's relocation baker's dozen, the OMNI Platinum Award for the 20th consecutive year, and the Quest for Quality award from Transportation & Logistics magazine. n IN MEMORIAM Donald L. Ullman Donald L. Ullman, former owner of Allied agent Federal Warehouse Co. (now Federal Companies), died Oct. 2 in Peoria, Ill., at age 74. Ullman spent more than 40 years at Federal Warehouse, which his father founded in 1913. Federal was one of the original members of Allied in 1928. Upon Ullman's retirement, he sold the company to a group of employees.  Ullman served for many years on the Illinois Movers' and Warehousemen's Association board of directors and was president in 1989, the year Pat McLaughlin was hired as executive director. "In those days, it was still a pretty radical decision to hire a female for this position, and I have always thanked him for his leadership," McLaughlin said. JANUARY | FEBRUARY 2014 Mel Homuth Direction 12 Mel Homuth, former National Van Lines driver and agency owner, died Oct. 27 in Machesney Park, Ill., after a long battle with cancer, at age 66. Homuth owned Action Moving & Storage, but was most comfortable on the road, driving for both the Household Goods and New Products divisions. He also helped with the Special Olympics Illinois Rubber Ducky Derby, delivering more than 30,000 ducks dropped into the Chicago River at the inaugural event. Homuth was recognized by National Van Lines as one of its Top Drivers and was one of the first to pull the coveted Wyland Whale trailer. He was honored by AMSA as a Super Van Operator of the Year in 2005. He is survived by his widow, Georgiann; son, David; and daughters, Amy Salamone and Karrie Albert. n SIRVA Worldwide Wins Two EMMA Awards SIRVA Worldwide has received two Asia-Pacific Expatriate Management and Mobility Awards (EMMAs) from the Forum for Expatriate Management (FEM). SIRVA won the Destination Services Provider of the Year Award for its successful global performance, high customer satisfaction ratings and innovation. Allied Pickfords, a SIRVA company, won the International Moving Company of the Year Award for quality and service excellence across the globe.  In addition to receiving two EMMAs, SIRVA was highly commended in the Best Vendor Partnership award category for its outstanding partnership with Schneider Electric (SE) Pacific. SIRVA and SE Pacific were recognized for their collaboration and success in centralizing SE Pacific's mobility model to gain greater consistency, control and insight into assignee activity and mobility costs. FEM also honored SIRVA's Nithya Abraham as a runner-up for the Global Mobility Rising Star of the Year and recognized Lorraine Jennings as highly commended in the Global Mobility Professional of the Year category. n NEWS BRIEFS Yarnall Cos., a United and Mayflower agent celebrating 100 years in business, was honored Nov. 1 by the Greater Sarasota, Fla., Chamber of Commerce. The recognition came during the group's 93rd annual Salute to Business for helping make Sarasota a desirable place to live and work. The Vandroff family has run the company since the early 1950s. n
