Some of the major cities in the region are listed in
the second chart. Washington, D.C., is a major hub for
government, military and contracting jobs, while Trenton
and Pittsburgh are undergoing significant industrial and
population changes. Charleston, W.V., is struggling to find
new jobs to replace the old coal jobs that have largely left the
region and, as a result, has the lowest percentage of shipments
coming in, with only 37.1 percent.
The highest percentage of inbound shipments is in
Charlottesville,Va., a college town that has many jobs in the
medical, education, finance and tech sectors. Washington,
D.C., is the most balanced, with 49.1 percent of shipments
coming in. The D.C. area remains a popular area for new
graduates hoping to break into government jobs, or jobs in
the political sector.
The most popular destinations for the region include many
of the high-volume states listed earlier in this issue, as well as
neighboring states. Florida is the most popular destination,
topping all the Mid-Atlantic spots except for the District of
Columbia, which sees more shipments going to California.

Looking at the housing market in the region, almost all
markets are above the national average. Only West Virginia
and Pennsylvania fall below the U.S. average home price of
$200,400. The highest median home price can be found in
Washington, D.C., with the median home price of $551,400.
The lowest price is in West Virginia, at just $99,800. While
home prices in West Virginia are far below market value, with
employment opportunities lacking, home sales are unlikely to
be strong in the state.
The housing market in each area has shown growth over the
past year, with Washington, D.C., showing the largest jump in
home prices, up 7.3 percent. West Virginia and Delaware had the
smallest increases at 1.9 percent and 2.3 percent respectively. All
other states are up an average of about 4.5 percent.
While parts of this region are struggling to find new ways
to stimulate their local economies, the Mid-Atlantic remains
an important hub for the moving and storage industry in the
United States.
