REPORT 3

Shipment weight
Annual shipment size report

I

n our last review of shipment weight, we included all
shipment types. Doing this makes the averages a bit higher
since it includes the exhibit and specialty moves, which
tend to be heavier than a normal household goods move.
This chart shows the average weight of 1st proviso shipments
from 2008 through Q3 2017, including corporate, COD, GSA
and military moves. When isolating just these categories, you
will notice that the average weight of shipments is up just
slightly, a few hundred pounds, over the past several years. This
will most likely level out to 2015 and 2016 levels once the full
year data has been received.
Shipment weight also varies by month, with the first few
months of the year having the lightest shipments. This pattern
has been true going back the past decade, as the chart indicates.
As school ends and families pack up and move during the busy
summer months, you see an increase in shipment weight and
totals. Once school is back in session, weights drop back down
entering into the winter months.
The table at right shows the average weight for each
shipment type through September 2017, along with the change
from last year. Corporate shipments remain the heaviest at

8,515 pounds per shipment, but are down just under 1 percent
from 2016 totals. The COD market again was the only sector
to show an increase in shipment weight, up almost 1 percent
to 7,795 pounds per shipment. The lightest shipments were
in the military sector, with an average of just 7,155 pounds
per shipment.
