OC TRANSPO IN OTTAWA, ONTARIO, is making history
with the Sept. 14 opening of O-Train Line 1, the Confederation Line-the world's first conversion of BRT to light rail.
Ottawa continues to experience growth and its public
transit system had become near capacity through the downtown core. The time had come to build a world-class system,
including a 2.5-km tunnel under the downtown core.
The city of Ottawa assembled a strong public-private
partnership that included financial commitments from the
province of Ontario and Canada's federal government. The
Rideau Transit Group, a consortium of Canadian and international companies, was selected through a highly competitive process to build and maintain the new system. Six years
in the making, the O-Train Confederation Line launched with
OC Transpo as operator.
John Manconi, general manager of the city's Transportation Services Department, said that with trains arriving every
five minutes or less, the new line is expected to carry up to
10,700 passengers per hour in each direction during weekday peak periods, which would make it the busiest light rail
