Short Line Connector - Winter 2018 - 14

"We'll see Class I carriers
more willing to work
with short lines to capture
more freight business."
- Dan Sabin, President, Iowa
Northern Railway Company

14

What specific challenges do
you see coming to the short
line and regional railroad
business this year?
Hunter: The biggest challenge we have
is that the Class I's aren't putting enough
marketing boots on the ground at the
local level. We serve both locally owned
companies and national and international
companies. We need help with having
someone call on the large national companies. We do have a very good partner in
Norfolk Southern, our primary interchange carrier. Even so, they don't have the
marketing presence they used to.
Sabin: I'm very concerned about our
Class I connections and the changes it
appears all the Class I's are making to
reduce cost at the expense of service. The
Class I's are reducing the frequency and
number of way freights. Where we used
to get five-day-a-week interchanges, now
we're seeing two-day-a-week. We believe
in delivering very high levels of service to
our customers, but we're only as strong as
our connections.

SHORT LINE CONNECTOR // WINTER 2018

We're seeing this across the board, in
varying degrees. Some Class I reactions
are much harsher than others. Fortunately,
we do have some options, so we can have a
little bit of persuasion over which way our
traffic gets routed. We've gone back and
convinced one or two of our connections
to come back with better service. But I
think a couple of our connections are going
to keep getting worse.
Hunter: Another challenge is car
availability. There are a lot of car types that
are going to age out. There's an objective of
the Class I's to shift to more standardized
car types, getting away from specialized
car types. Boxcars are a particular concern.
Right now, a lot of boxcar business lives
in the short line world. We're going to see
them aging out at an ever-increasing rate.
Everyone's going to have to get more efficient (with the limited remaining boxcar
inventory) if we're going to continue to
maintain or grow boxcar business. For
example, car cycle times need to improve.
The bottom line is that railcars in general,
and boxcars specifically, spend way more
time sitting than rolling.
Chodorow: I think for all of us in
the industry - railroads and vendors
- it's figuring out how to best adopt
technology to help further the business
and provide more growth opportunities,
become more efficient, be a better supplychain participant.
