How is technology affecting
your company?
Chodorow: For us, PTC would be the
technology initiative with the most obvious
impact. We need to follow the government
mandate and put in place all of the
business and technology changes needed
to adopt it.
I think technology is also highlighting
the need to have good business processes,
generate reliable data across systems and
have that data be readily accessible and
actionable. We've been investing time and
energy in that for the last four or five years,
and it's only going to continue.
Hunter: There are a lot of technology
changes coming, including electronic
record-keeping and drones for bridge
inspections. So far, all the impacts I've seen
have mostly been positive.
There are some concerns with railroads
being able to be competitive in the
future. Trucking is lowering its costs

with technology. Railroads also need to
lower our costs with technology to remain
efficient and competitive.
Sabin: Having GPS on all locomotives,
so we have a real-time handle on what
each of our trains is doing, has been a
big step. We have computer-assisted train
dispatching, which has provided additional
safeguards. We've added wayside scanners
throughout our line to correctly and very
exactly deal with some of the hazardous
regulations on train placements. It's given
us a way to be far more efficient in the
administration of running our trains.

What opportunities do you
think the near future holds?
Sabin: Because of the downturn of the
business in coal and crude oil, I think
that we'll see Class I carriers more willing
to work with short lines to capture more
freight business than they were willing to
consider in the past.
