Short Line Connector - Winter 2018 - 16

"We are seeing a significant amount of institutional
knowledge retire and a new wave of digital-first employees
enter the industry. It's important that the institutional
knowledge be transferred to this new generation."
- Nick Chodorow, Chief Information Officer, The Belt Railway Company of Chicago

Chodorow: I think we have the opportunity to make ourselves an invaluable part
of the North American supply chain and
to be an information-rich partner with
everybody we interface with.
We're at an incredible inflection point
for the industry. We are seeing a significant
amount of institutional knowledge retire
and a new wave of digital-first employees
enter the industry. It's important that the
institutional knowledge be transferred to
this new generation who brings new energy
and new approaches to the table, enabling
the industry to continue to grow and
prosper, as it has under the stewardship of
the retiring workforce.

What impact do you think
such things as driverless
cars could have on the
railroad industry?
Hunter: I've read that driverless cars may
reduce the demand for individual car
ownership. If you reduce the demand for
new cars, then you reduce the demand for
many other things the railroads haul.
Sabin: I think where driverless cars
and trucks scare me is on highways and
at railroad crossings. From the railroad's
perspective, what do they do to our
liability and our overall relationship with
the general public? I think it's a big deal
for us. As an industry, we seem to be out
of the equation in the research being done
on that.
Hunter: I'm not overly concerned about
the potential for accidents at crossings.
They're experimenting with driverless cars
in Pittsburgh. If you can program for a city
that's as difficult to drive in as Pittsburgh,

SHORT LINE CONNECTOR // WINTER 2018

I don't know why a railroad crossing
couldn't be programmed. What does
concern me is that, in Pennsylvania, you
have ice and slush and other severe weather
at times. I don't know if they've worked out
how to handle that, when a car's sensors
could be covered with ice, slush or snow.
Chodorow: I look at it as the impact of
automation itself - on trucks, cars and
ships, barge traffic, the entire supply chain.
They're all readily adopting automation
to improve efficiencies, provide more value
and improve safety. We in the rail industry
need to understand all we can about this
and work diligently to get ahead of it.
If we don't, those other transportation
options are going to end up having a
higher value proposition than we do.
People outside the industry find it
hard to believe we don't know where
trains - and the goods transported
on those trains - are all the time when
they can log into their phones and see
exactly where their UPS and FedEx
packages are. That's information we
should be providing, too.

What are some ways that
railroads are, or should
be, looking to decrease
financial risk?
Hunter: I think there's the potential for
ever-expanding public-private partnerships
due to the public benefit. For example, the
state of Pennsylvania has a cost-sharing
program to help fund new and rebuilt
track projects.
Sabin: We need to be taking a really
good look at the future of health insurance
and benefits. It may be a task force we
