PAN AM RAILWAYS

A Pan Am train departs Ayer, Massachusetts, on Jan. 8, 2017, with 60 intermodal containers to return to Maine for more loads of Poland Spring
bottled water.

The recipients of the 2017 ASLRRA Marketing Awards were chosen for their
initiative, investment and ability to adapt to changing times. Congratulations
to Pan Am Railways, whose successful Poland Spring project is a perfect
example of intermodal opportunities.

P

an Am Railways fulfilled a longtime dream in January 2016, when
Poland Spring bottled water was
transported from Maine to Massachusetts by rail. The project was years in the
making, and it was achieved thanks to
Pan Am's collaboration with Nestle Waters
North America (NWNA), MaineDOT,
Icelandic shipping company Eimskip
and MassDOT.
Poland Spring, a division of NWNA,
bottles 800 million gallons of water a year
from Maine aquifers and has three bottling
plants in the state. When the popularity
of bottled water took off in the 1990s, an
increasing number of trucks were needed
to bring the product to market. Fortunately, NWNA's new logistics manager,
who started in 2015, understood that intermodal service would reduce the number
and duration of truck trips. He contacted
Pan Am to figure out the logistical
puzzle that involved pieces from all the

participating parties: MaineDOT funded
improvements at the Port of Portland and
Waterville in Maine; MassDOT funded
the expansion of the Pan Am intermodal
terminal in Ayer, Massachusetts; and
Eimskip supplied the containers.
Next, Pan Am put together a plan to
ensure delivery expectations were met and
the service would be economically viable.
Thanks to the resourcefulness and
determination of stakeholders, Pan Am
had a 67 percent carload increase after
just one year. As a result, NWNA began
considering other ways to increase rail
service with Pan Am. Also, Pan Am started
marketing intermodal to other shippers in
hopes of extending its reach north and east
to Aroostook County and Atlantic Canada
and south to Connecticut.
In 2017, Pan Am surpassed 12,000 units
for NWNA and successfully completed
a trial of moving double-stack bulk water
within Maine for NWNA. Pan Am also

opened two new lanes of intermodal
traffic, joining forces with ASLRRA
members St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad
and New Brunswick Southern Railway.
The collaboration with St. Lawrence
& Atlantic established service from
Richmond, Quebec, to Portland and
Ayer. This service leveraged previous
partnerships involving Eimskip,
MaineDOT and MassDOT, and it linked
Quebec shippers with New England in
addition to Eimskip's global shipping reach
from Portland.
Another transborder lane linking the
Port of Saint John to the Boston marketplace kicked off in third quarter 2017.
This service, in partnership with New
Brunswick Southern Railway, targeted
containerized freight moving via the Port
of Saint John and allowed product to
reach consumers in Boston three to four
days ahead of New York port callings.
Working with other ASLRRA short lines
for this inter-Northeast traffic shows that
intermodal does not need to only be a
Class I service offering - short lines can
successfully partner and participate in the
intermodal revolution as well. —
