T

he Alaska Railroad is a true legend.
Its history of determination, perseverance and endurance makes it the
backbone of the Last Frontier. Begun in
1903 in Seward, Alaska, the railroad today
provides passenger service along 482 miles
of track that reaches to Fairbanks. In the
winter, riders can experience the serenity of
backcountry Alaska from the comfort of a
warm railcar. On a clear summer day, travelers can enjoy spectacular views of Denali,
the tallest mountain peak in North America. Here are just a few of the many reasons
a ride on the Alaska Railroad should be on
your 2018 bucket list:
1. See the northern lights. Who
doesn't dream of seeing the northern
lights? If you are like most people,
catching this phenomenon is
something you have always wanted
to do - and the Alaska Railroad
can make it happen! Take the Aurora
Winter Train from Anchorage to
Interior Alaska for some of the best
viewing in the state. A three-night
tour provides ample opportunity to
catch this ethereal display.
2. Float among glaciers. Alaska's
glaciers are some of the most
beautiful and sought-after sights in
the world. Passengers can head to
Spencer Glacier, a massive wall of
ice cascading down the mountains
to Spencer Lake, on the Glacier
Discovery Train, and then kayak
down the Placer River among icebergs
or hike on the glacier itself. This
remote area is only accessible via the
Alaska Railroad.
3. Take a ride on a dog sled. Several
stops on the Alaska Railroad will
give you the chance to enjoy a dog

sled ride of your own or even cuddle
a puppy. A visit to a sled dog kennel
will give you an in-depth look at what
it takes to win the Iditarod, and at the
Denali National Park sled dog yard,
you'll see the last working dog sled
team in the National Park Service.
4. View wildlife in its natural habitat.
From late May through August, you
can hop aboard the railroad for trips
to national parks, where you will
get views of bears, moose, caribou,
wolves, eagles, humpback whales
and orcas, sea lions and otters. You
can easily spend a half day observing
brown and black bears as they
congregate in untouched areas near
salmon streams and tidal estuaries.
5. Have backcountry adventures.

backcountry, homes of Alaskans
who prefer to live off the grid dot the
landscape. With no roads, the only
way to reach the area is by train. The
Hurricane Turn Train is a lifeline for
these Alaskans, and passengers have a
chance to talk with locals while riding
by these 55 miles of wilderness. As
one of the only remaining flag-stop
services of its kind in the country,
travelers can hop off the train and get
back on with the wave of a flag.
With its home in the central adventure
hub of Anchorage, a ride on the Alaska
Railroad will help passengers check off an
item - or two - on their bucket lists! —
