Working through a crisis seemed to increase
camaraderie and team collaboration. The need to communicate all the changes surrounding the pandemic
increased communication among and within practices.
Respondents spoke of a greater sense of connectedness
and working towards the mission of keeping everyone
as safe as possible. 
When asked, " What has been provided to you by
leadership to help reduce or relieve stress at work? "
Of the ASOA members participating in the research,
33% of the practices provided a free subscription to
a mindfulness meditation app such as Headspace or
Calm to their employees. (The scientific definition of
mindfulness is the self-regulation of our attention with
an approach or attitude of curiosity, openness, and
acceptance.3 The practice of mindfulness, over time,
has been shown to help reduce stress.4) Moreover, 50%
reported intentional and scheduled breaks for taking a
short walk outside. 
Workplace and personal stress were central themes
that surfaced from the research. With 50% of respondents reporting no stress management strategies
offered, the silver lining question here might be: " How
can we intentionally support our staff with stress
management measures? " As self-aware leaders, we have
a responsibility to become more mindful of stress and
how stress influences staff 's lives and work. 
As we continue into 2021, how do we approach
a " better normal " with curiosity, openness, and
