s leaders, one of our most
important roles is to
develop and foster growth
in our leadership teams.
Finding experienced
managers in ophthalmology who can lead through
continual change is quite rare. I've
found great success from mining
for talent within our clinical team
and cultivating our own leaders.
I discovered Whitney Johnson's
book, Build an A Team: Play to
Their Strengths and Lead Them
Up the Learning Curve, at a time
I needed it most. Following my
plan to develop from within, I
had onboarded several employees
who were new to management and
leadership at the same time. I found
myself faced with the challenge of
developing all of them at once.
Johnson's framework for leadership development starts with
understanding the " S curve " of
learning, from the beginning of our
learning journey (the bottom of the
S) to mastery (the top of the S). She
outlines how to place each of our
teams on their own S curves, providing a clear framework to meet
each employee where they are and
to manage their growth through
their S curves.
Another key concept covered
in the book is how " thoughtful
constraints " can induce disruption

(breaking up boundaries and the
status quo) and encourage growth.
For many of us whose first inclination is to nurture and protect new
talent, this was a thought-provoking concept that has influenced
my thinking. Facing challenges,
overcoming fears, and working
through failures can lead to powerful growth.
While Johnson focuses on the
process of crafting a high-performing team from new leaders, she
also shares a framework for how
to encourage continued growth
among the experienced. Her
structured plan to challenge and
motivate our most effective leaders
is the antidote for complacency
and sets a path for a continued
growth cycle.
Build an A Team is a book that
continues to reinforce and guide
my thoughts on team development. I recommend it as a staple
for any manager who is on a
journey to become a leader people
want to follow. AE
