FAST FACTS
VitreoRetinal Eye Center
Location: 2 offices in Biloxi,
Miss., and Covington, La.
Established: 2005 (after
Katrina)
Mission:  Providing care for
our patients with compassion,
expertise, and excellence.
Tagline: Keeping your future
in sight
Practice Administrator:
Natalie Loyacano, COMT,
OSA, OCS, ROUB
Size: 1 retinal specialist,
8 employees

AE: During the COVID-19
crisis, what challenges did your
practice face?
NL: As a small practice of eight staff
members, we were concerned about
our ability to remain open. Practices
and businesses in the surrounding
area were closing or downsizing. We
knew that our patients needed the
services [we] provided.
AE: How did the practice work
together to maintain service?
NL: During the two-month period
of March to end of May 2020,
our patient volume decreased due
to busines restrictions outlined in
our location cities. We focused on
providing emergent patient care, and
our staff rotated shifts staying late
or arriving early. No one was laid off
because the physician-owner covered
staff salaries for two months. This
helped ease the apprehension of the
staff and boost morale.

AE: What methods did your
practice institute to keep moving
forward during the pandemic?
NL: Once regulations eased, allowing in-person visits to increase, our
staff implemented extended hours
to allow for proper social distancing
and sanitation measures. Working
together, the staff cleaned exam
rooms and waiting areas, while
contacting patients to notify them
of clinic protocols ahead of appointments. We instructed patients to wait
in their cars to increase their comfort
and safety. It was truly teamwork.
AE: What have you gleaned from
this experience?
NL: I'm amazed at the selflessness
of my staff and impressed by the
willingness they showed to come
together as a team. I knew I had a
great staff, but the willingness they
showed to put the needs of others
before themselves touched me.
