there.  We missed going

hen Rebecca Rivenbark,
COE, OCS, CPSS,
was originally hired
to work at Carolina
Ophthalmology
Associates, it was not
because of her clinical
expertise. Instead, it was for her
finance background.
" The owners had previously
employed clinical staff for this
position, " she said.  " They found,
however, that they needed [someone
with] a strong business background. "  
Her expertise advantaged her in
managing the practice's business
successfully. Two years of being
an administrator and then joining
ASOA, though, convinced her
she wanted to earn the Certified
Ophthalmic Executive (COE)
credential. " I wanted to prove to
myself that I could pass the exam,
and that I understand ophthalmic
administration even though I work
for a small practice, " Rivenbark said.  
Passing the exam was not only
her proudest accomplishment but
also a turning point in her career.
" Becoming a COE gave me more
credibility with the owners of our
practice as well as staff, " she said.  " [It
also] gave me more confidence to
get involved with ASOA and serve
on committees, " where she found
support from others with her same
job responsibilities and continued
to meet fellow administrators with
whom she could collaborate.
And ultimately, Rivenbark
reflected, " It made me feel more of
a part of my profession. " AE
