HOW TO BECOME INDISPENSABLE

hen COVID-19 first
appeared, people were
worried about keeping
themselves and their
loved ones safe. Those
fears were compounded
when entire economies
began shutting down, threatening
financial security. As businesses
went into survival mode, leaders
were forced to make difficult
personnel decisions. Employees
who previously felt secure in their
roles began worrying whether they
would " make the cut. "
A CASE STUDY
When Jane's practice entered rough
financial times, the physician-owner
swiftly began assessing business

expenses-the costliest of which was
labor. As the practice administrator,
Jane was tasked with deciding which
of two front desk associates to let go.
While one had been with the practice
for years, the newer employee, Erica,
had begun running the practice's
social media accounts, was always
eager to take on new projects, and
made Jane's job easier in general.
Despite Jane's instinct to keep the
employee with longer tenure, she
knew letting go of Erica would have
a more substantial impact on practice
operations, so she let the long-time
staff member go.
INCREASING YOUR VALUE
No doubt, practice administrators
play an instrumental role within

the organization. While this may
provide you with an underlying
sense of job security, you should
not rest on your laurels. Many
factors-several of which are in
your control-can help you show
leaders what a valuable employee
you are. Follow the strategies
below and feel secure knowing you
are an indispensable member of
your practice.
Make your boss's job easier.
Leaders who are confident in their
staff 's ability to accomplish tasks
and meet expectations can better
focus on providing top-notch
patient care. As the administrator,
you should feel comfortable making
decisions and managing operations somewhat autonomously.
