to ASOA founder Lucy Santiago,

Bachman then described how she
would focus her service as ASOA's
president in the coming year: on
teamwork.
"Teamwork is a critical element
in managing our practices and
what makes ASOA such a vibrant
society," she said.
Bachman noted that a sense of
professionalism is needed to successfully navigate healthcare today,
a professionalism based on four
discipline-specific pillars: knowledge,
networking, expertise, and advocacy.

asked for members to get involved
and demonstrate ASOA's mission
of advancing the skills and professionalism of ophthalmic practice management.
Bachman concluded her address
by presenting several awards and
honors to ASOA member-leaders

(see ASOA News, pp. 54) and
introduced the first of the Annual
Meeting's two keynote speakers.

TAKEAWAYS: KEYNOTER
CHRISTINE CASHEN ON HOW
TO "STOP GLOBAL WHINING"

Former radio and television personality Christine Cashen offered the audience key insights on how to master
their attitude and positively influence their environment.
Noting that people like (or don't like) us based on how
they feel when they are with us, Cashen underscored the
importance of first speaking their language-and then gave
these ten tips for making yourself (and others) happier:
1.
2.
3.

4.
5.
6.

Don't misuse email communication. For example,
don't "reply all" to emails unless absolutely necessary.
Build in quiet time: Bookend your day with (at least)
10 minutes off your electronic devices.
Got a problem employee? Noting that everyone's
favorite radio station is WIIFM-What's In It For
Me?-Cashen said, "Find people's place to fit, the
thing that makes them tick." In the meantime,
heed her mother's advice: "No one can drive you
crazy unless you give them the keys."
Look at things with "grateful goggles" rather than
"gotcha goggles." Or as Alex Haley said, "Find the
good and praise it."
Watch your self-talk. Words reinforce beliefs.
Turn those "grateful goggles" on yourself.
Act "as if " you're in a good mood, and pretty soon
you will be.

7.

Focus on treating others well. "It's great to have a
good day," Cashen said. "It's better when someone
else has a good day because of you."
8. Make BOOGIE-ing a core value: "Be Outstanding
Or Get Involved Elsewhere."
9. Need a break and can't get one? Grab a clipboard,
and stride purposely for 3 minutes-to nowhere.
10. Above all, put compassion back in fashion. Think
about how what's happening affects the "other
guy" and do what you can to make it better. "Most
people don't need your criticism, your judgment,
or your anger," Cashen said. "Mostly they need
your love, prayer, and support."
