ith so many demands on
technician time in clinic
and the onus on clinical
efficiency, Wheaton Eye
Clinic hired licensed
pharmacy techs to
handle indirect patient
care. Medical department manager
Kati Read, COT, COE, tells us what's
involved and how it's working.

AE: Why and how did Wheaton Eye

Clinic begin having a pharmacy tech
doing prior authorizations/refills?
KR: We wanted to better facilitate a
system that would best meet the needs
of our patients and our physicians
in the clinic. By utilizing a licensed
pharmacy technician, we were able to
keep our technicians in direct patient
care and handle the increased volume
of other tasks such as prior authorizations, medication refills, etc.

Services: Surgical care in all
ophthalmic specialties, eye exams,
contact lenses, optical, and urgent
care. Full-service family eyecare
in LASIK, cataract, retina, uveitis,
pediatrics, neuro-ophthalmology,
glaucoma, general ophthalmology,
cornea, and oculoplastics.  

AE: What issues has this system
eliminated? 
KR: Having an individual [who]
can promptly take phone calls from
pharmacies or patients has made us
more efficient. We are able to provide
more timely and responsive care to
our patients. 
AE: What other tasks does the pharmacy tech perform in the course of
the day?
KR: Handle refill requests via phone
or fax, verify medication instructions
as indicated in chart for patients,
and initiate prior authorizations on
behalf of patients. 
AE: What has been the staff reception to this system?
KR: The positive reception has been
palpable! The clinical staff and
physicians are so grateful to have this
resource on our team. We all rely on
each other to be the best team possible. I think many of us wonder how
we did it any other way! AE
