Hearing Life November/December 2019 - 27

I

don't recall the Army ever providing hearing
protection-or even suggesting it-until I got to
Chinooks in early 1968. Without so much as ear plugs,
I'd gone through basic training practices with M1
rifles, .45-caliber pistols, M60 machine guns, .50-caliber
machine guns, 81 mm mortars, 106 mm recoilless rifles
and hand grenades. Plus, for two years I was on the
ROTC rifle team.
The Engineer Officer Basic Course-where we built
things and blew them up-didn't even include hearing
protection. Neither did helicopter flight school, where
we trained in the UH-1 Iroquois-better known as the
Huey, one of the first turbine-powered helicopters and
the icon of the Vietnam War.

space between the cockpit and cargo compartment and
likely the noisiest spot in the helicopter.
In Vietnam, the sound-deadening insulation of the
Chinooks was removed so hydraulic lines could be
monitored for damage from hostile fire-which left no
soundproofing against the high-frequency vibrations put
out by the engines, transmissions and rotor drivetrains.
Hearing protection was an absolute must. Like most
Chinook pilots, I wore ear plugs religiously, as well as
an Aircrew Protective Helmet No. 5 (APH-5) with
earphones, which was standard at the time.
Chinook crews also used three radios and the
intercom simultaneously. This made the noise level in
the cockpit so extreme that I'd have to turn my volume

From May 1968 to May 1969, I flew the CH-47A in
Vietnam. Although the high-pitched whine of the Huey's
turbine engine could be uncomfortable, the Chinook-
with two larger turbine engines and five transmissions-
could be painful.
I quickly realized this during flight training. Each
instructor had two students. The one not flying sat in the
jump seat under the forward transmission, in confined

He'd not yet been issued fire-retardant Nomex flight suit. Pilots had to wear

regular leather-not jungle-boots, leather gloves, cotton or wool socks and
underwear, and fly with sleeves rolled down for fire safety.
