We know that 2010 has been a challenging year for those of us working in state houses across the country as some elected officials discuss ways to fill budget gaps by placing discriminatory taxes on our industry’s products and containers. Excise taxes, retailer fees, container taxes, bottle bills. All options are on the table. ABA’s Jim McGreevy and IBWA’s Dan Felton will look at what has already been proposed, what may be looming on the horizon and how ABA and IBWA and our state partners are engaged to win the debate.

This session will provide attendees with much-needed technical and marketing information on the alternatives to commonlyused packaging materials in today’s bottled water and beverage marketplace. Discussions will include recyclable PET, polylactic acid (PLA), and PET and Tritan® as materials used in 3- and 5gallon home and office delivery (HOD) containers for bottled water. If you are shopping for new innovative materials for water and beverage packaging, this is a must attend session to gain new knowledge about what’s available in the marketplace.

Regulatory bodies worldwide, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, authorize the use of polycarbonate for beverage and food containers based on an extensive scientific database that supports their safety. However, in recent years the raw material used to make polycarbonate, bisphenol-A (BPA) has been alleged to be an “endocrine disruptor” that may cause health effects at very low levels of exposure. This session will provide an update of the current health and environmental issue landscape for BPA and polycarbonate plastic.
