Bottled Water and Tap Water: Just the Facts (1 CEU)
Bob Hirst, Vice President, Education, Science, and Technical Relations, IBWA
CEU

1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
LCI Session (1 CEU)
Tamika Sims, Ph.D., Director of Science and Research, IBWA
CEU

Environmental activists and media have long misinformed the public about how bottled water is regulated and tested. They claim that public drinking water is tested more frequently than bottled water. They claim that bottled water is regulated for quality less stringently than public drinking water. Come see and hear the truth about how bottled water compares to tap water. This session focuses on the facts, with factual illustrations and examples. After attending, you’ll be equipped to respond to local allegations about shortfalls in bottled water regulations.

IBWA has commissioned a life cycle inventory (LCI) of the bottled water industry for 2007. The LCI executive summary and three LCI tools (interactive spreadsheets) for small pack, home and office delivery (HOD), and combination plants highlight material inputs, energy consumption, and environmental emissions. They were designed to be the basis of further study of the potential improvement of resource use and environmental emissions associated with bottled water product systems. This session will reveiw the LCI data, explain how to interpret the data, and demonstrate how it can be used in your business.

Andrew Eaton, Ph.D., Technical Director, MWH Labs
CEU

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) Audits (1 CEU)
CEU

The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) has four programs which are all reported to be equivalent in the eyes of the retailers. Bottlers are free to choose any of them but the determining factor is the size, complexity of operation, lines of business (i.e. water versus mix of beverages) and systems capability connected to IT platforms that guides someone to one of the standards versus another. Learn what they are and which one applies to your business.

Consumers are typically asking bottled water companies about the presence of emerging contaminants as “new” compounds make news. This seminar will review the following concepts: A) What is an emerging contaminant and how do you know what is “coming”? B) Where do they originate? C) Which contaminants are of potential concern for bottled water producers and what treatment information exists for them? D) What occurrence data exists for those contaminants? E) How do you test for them? F) Should you test for them? G) What if anything are EPA and FDA doing on these fronts? Compounds to be discussed will include both the “old” and the “new,” including perchlorate, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, nitrosamines, and PDBEs, plus others that are not yet necessarily on the radar screen.
