"You could put 1% of synthetic
base oil in a formulation and call it a
synthetic blend," Garguiolo said. "You
could put 20% in. There are no criteria. That has hurt the market because
no one's playing apples to apples."
SYNTHETIC ADVANTAGES
Cummins said he could cite a dozen reasons "right off the top of my head" why
a synthetic is better than a mineral oil
- and he did: "Less friction, less wear,
oxidation resistance along with chemical
resistance, thermal stability, low toxicity.
There's a lot of nasty stuff in mineral
oils. Lower volatility or evaporation.
Higher viscosity index, which means the
viscosity is not going to change as much
with respect to temperature. You can
design lower pour points - that's the
big advantage of PAOs."
"Longer oil life. Reduced oil
consumption. Safer operation," he
continued. "You use less, for less
disposal. And, in many cases, you
can design biodegradability into your
synthetic product."
With all those advantages, manufacturers of synthetic lubricants are
positioning themselves as providers
of solutions. Customers have unique
challenges - maybe someone makes
a small power drill with a motor that
overheats - that present opportunities

for lubricant manufacturers with the
research capabilities to customize
formulations.
"In years past, people just took
off-the-shelf petroleum-type products
because they were easy and successful,"
Cummins said. "Now, we can solve
problems without a huge addition of
cost. For an incremental amount, they
can solve the problem and get a good
product with much better properties."
There will always be customers
who won't or can't invest upfront for
long-term savings, but synthetics save
money by requiring less product over
time. They also preserve machinery
and contribute to quality assurance,
because machines suffering wear and
tear from the use of cheap mineral oil
will lose tolerances faster, leading to
inconsistency in production, Cummins said.
As PolySi researcher John Kurosky
noted, the many advantages of synthetics include their power to expand
operating temperatures of greases and
fluids. PolySi is even exploring greases
for research, defense and drilling uses
in Arctic and Antarctic conditions.
"When it comes to synthetic oils,
they have much greater thermal
stability and oxidative stability, as
well as very good low-temperature
characteristics," Kurosky said. "On the
cold side, because a synthetic doesn't
freeze up as rapidly as a mineral oil,
you have a lubricating composition
that will move and be able to provide
a lubricating film between working
surfaces at the reduced temperatures,
instead of becoming solid and getting
pushed out of the way."
MARKETING SYNTHETIC
LUBRICANTS
Call it a vicious circle that actually
benefits the synthetic lubricants sector.
The automotive industry seeks better
engine performance, which drives
advancements in synthetics, even as
those unceasing calls for improved fuel

efficiency result in consequences that
synthetics are stepping up to solve.
Since General Motors introduced its
dexos1™ Gen 2 specifications to prevent the severe engine knock known
as low-speed pre-ignition, Garguiolo's
Reliance Fluid Technologies produces
product with more than 40 licenses
for Gen 2 motor oils.
Synthetic lubricant makers are also
well positioned to serve an automotive sector where the players are no
longer limited to the global Big 8 and
engines aren't all gasoline-powered.
Automakers emerging from the
technology sector "look at the world
very differently," Leuth said. "They
have lubrication requirements still, but
they might be higher-temperature or
under more extreme conditions than
traditional automotive."
Electric motors revolve at onceunimaginable speeds - up to 18,000
rpm silently whirring under the hood
of a Tesla. "You've got to have synthetic
lubricants in those bearings," Cummins
said. "You've got a single-speed gearbox.
You've got to have synthetics because it
has to last a long time."
Even beyond automotive parameters, emerging technology requires a
"different set of lubrication needs and
requirements," Leuth said. Electronic
devices might not need to function
in 40-below temperatures, but their
shrinking components work at
ultra-high speeds, requiring performance-based lubricants unknown to
previous generations. Leuth's PolySi
even formulated a lubricant for a
fitness watch.
"That's a very niche market that
was brought to us," Leuth said. "They
had a lubrication issue; we were able
to solve it for them. Both parties were
happy. We're a custom formulator."
Many of the emerging players in
synthetics are startups or companies
that have restructured to ride the synthetics wave. That makes them agile,
responsive and staffed with people
