AT-TUOTE AND NESTE COLLABORATE ON BIO-BASED INDUSTRIAL LUBRICANT
Finnish company AT-Tuote, in collaboration with Neste, announced the launch
of what they claim is the world's first industrial lubricant with nearly 100%
bio-based content. The AT Renewable Penetrating Lubricant features Neste's MY
Renewable IsoalkaneTM as its key component, and 95% of its content is reportedly
derived from renewable sources. The lubricant has been developed for all industrial, automotive and DIY applications. It will be available this spring in the Nordic
countries, the U.S., Mexico, Brazil and Germany.
ELECTRIC VEHICLE COMPONENTS SPUR REFORMULATIONS
A report in the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers' Tribology &
Lubrication Technology (TLT) said the demand for electric vehicles is prompting
a reformulation of gear oils, coolants and greases. This is primarily because they
are in close contact with electronic modules, sensors and circuits. According
to Kuldeep Mistry, Ph.D., an engineering researcher and product development
specialist at The Timken Co., "Lubricants will have to be compatible with a broad
range of electrical hardware, including everything from copper wires and electric
modules to special plastics and insulation materials." 
THORDON MAKES STRONG STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO EAL STUDY
Thordon Bearings released a strong statement to customers when the first phase
of a DNV GL study concluded that new and nondegraded environmentally
acceptable lubricants (EALs) are as safe as mineral oil-based lubricants in most
conditions, except for high-oil-film pressure and low temperatures. An increasing
number of stern tube-bearing failures after the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency regulated the use of mineral oils in "oil-to-sea interfaces" prompted the
study. Craig Carter, director of marketing and customer service at Thordon
Bearings, said, "With mineral oil-based lubricants now rightly regarded as environmentally unacceptable, the only proven EAL option available for lubricating
the propeller shaft bearing is seawater." DNV GL said that open- and closed-water
lubricated solutions were not tested as a part of the EAL study.
NEW COATING REDUCES WEAR AND SHAFT RUNOUT
Engineers at Freudenberg Sealing Technologies and Freudenberg Technology
Innovation have developed a new coating to achieve optimum lubrication in gears
and pumps with synthetic lubricants. This new coating, 75 FKM 585, forms a
flexible bond with the elastomer of rotary shaft seals and improves the wetting of
the sealing lip. The coating was designed for customers who already use the standard Simmerring 75 FKM 585 in drives for which the manufacturers recommend
the use of polyglycol oils. However, according to Freudenberg, the technology is
not limited to applications with FKM but can be transferred to other materials.
