FLOOD SEASON ALONG MISSISSIPPI RIVER TO HAVE IMPACT ON BASE
OIL CARGO
According to a three-part series in Lube Report about disruptions to traffic on
rivers in the Midwest, South and Eastern U.S., base oil companies are preparing
for flooding season along the Mississippi River. Flooding can delay deliveries due
to the danger of navigating high waters and rogue currents and can lock systems
that become unusable. Some of the protective measures these base oil companies
are taking include technologically advanced high-water warnings and simply monitoring weather forecasts. Per the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, of the 2.3 billion
tons of cargo moving on U.S. waterways each year, 22% are petroleum products.
BRITAIN TO BAN GASOLINE AND DIESEL CARS BY 2035
Britain has announced its intention to ban the sale of gasoline- and diesel-powered
vehicles by 2035. While many environmental groups reacted positively, the
Guardian reported that manufacturers are calling the measure a "date without a
plan." The ban includes hybrid vehicles, meaning the only cars on the road will
be electric- or hydrogen-powered automobiles. Society of Motor Manufacturers
and Traders Chief Executive Mike Hawes was not happy about the announcement
and said the date was "extremely concerning." Hawes added that manufacturers
are fully invested in a zero-emissions future and that accelerating an already very
challenging ambition "will take more than industry investment. A date without a
plan will merely destroy value today."
TUK PHYSICISTS SIMULATE LUBRICATION AT THE ATOMIC LEVEL
Researchers from the University of Kaiserslautern (TUK) have gone beyond
understanding lubricants' influence on tribological processes at the macro and
micro levels and are now looking at lubricants on the atomic level. Making
these observations experimentally is nigh impossible. Instead, they are using
supercomputing resources at the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart
and the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre to run simulations for the influence of
interactions between fluid and solid atoms as they pertain to friction and cutting
processes. The researchers found that lubricants reduced friction by 25% and
reduced the heat impact on the solid bodies by up to 20%. The team hopes that
as computing power increases, so will simulation complexity.
CANADIAN COMPANY TURNING OIL INTO GREEN HYDROGEN
According to a report in Petro Industry News, Canadian company Proton Technologies has new technology that generates hydrogen by pumping oxygen into
underground oil, gas or coal reservoirs. It then sets that oxygen on fire to ignite
the hydrocarbons. Water vapor is then injected into the reservoir, where it interacts with the hydrocarbons, creating a blend of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
Adding extra water then maximizes the hydrogen production. Proton Technologies CEO Grant Strem says the idea is to clean up decommissioned oil fields and
transform them into hydrogen hubs.
