Structuring the Plan
A strong plan delegates responsibilities, keeps systems
running by designating off-site servers and includes robust
communications elements, said James J. Griffin, director,
business development, for South Coast Terminals, based
in Houston.
While BG Products' revised plan assigned specific roles to
executives, Henry took a two-pronged approach to incorporating the workforce. First, an unmanageable overabundance
of roles and titles for every contingency were stripped
out and replaced with the need-to-know fundamentals of
responding to a crisis.
Henry also asked hourly employees for feedback on the
information they would want in the immediate aftermath of
a crisis.
A checklist in the BG Products plan explains what
constitutes a crisis and gives managers a tool for conducting
training and walk-throughs.
In order to maintain operations in case of a disaster that
shuts down machinery and facilities, manufacturers build
backup capabilities into their systems. South Coast Terminals establishes equipment redundancies whenever possible,
"If you wait until the point that there
is a disaster or emergency to lay the
groundwork for how you communicate
to employees, it may be too late."

fill gaps in labor and supervision pools.

"very scalable and agile," said CEO Adam Sandler. "We can
pivot easily to different equipment or even other locations if
needed, depending on the severity of the disruption."
Basics such as fire plans should be written and tested
every six months to assure their alignment with current
operations, advised Felix Moreno Jr., owner of EGF
Energy Partners, also based in Houston. Spill prevention
and countermeasure plans should also be written out and
reviewed regularly, including when changes are made in
storage processes and facilities.
Testing the Plan
Tabletop exercises flush out potential problems to address,
said Moreno. Such exercises can reveal how long the business could operate before running out of raw materials or
