he COVID-19 pandemic
sidelined workers, silenced
plants and put entire industries
on hold as citizens were told to "stay
home, stay safe." But thanks to strategic preparation, some manufacturers
were better equipped than others to
navigate the COVID-19 communications fallout and ensure that clients
and stakeholders stayed informed
about the virus's potential impact on
the business and the many people
supporting that business. For example,
one ILMA member's website featured
this message on its home page:

COVID-19 from entering our network or impacting our production.

early actions that have helped reduce
our risk for exposure, including
real-time supplier communications to
ensure the supply of our critical raw
materials. As of today, we remain
open for business, and all operations
are fully functioning.

Such well-conceived statements of
assurance and community care do
not just happen. They result from a
comprehensive approach to crisiscommunication planning. Of course,
no one can foresee every possible
future threat to business and customer
confidence. But having a detailed and
up-to-date crisis-communication plan
can strengthen customer and community ties, even as it helps to protect
