T

he fifth-generation mobile
network - known as 5G - is
slated to improve network
performance and enhance mobile
broadband with faster and more
dependable service. Those changes
will have a profound effect on the
manufacturing industry, altering what
manufacturers produce as well as how
they make their products.
"The prospect that factories will be
filled with smart devices connected by 5G
holds the promise of the biggest global
transformation since the Industrial Revolution," said David Van Dorselaer, general
manager industry solutions, manufacturing and transportation, at AT&T. "In
these 'smart factories,' connected devices
are expected to sense their environments
and interoperate with each other. This

enables decentralized decisions that can
drive productivity, improve safety and
reduce operational costs."
Tony Uphoff, president and CEO of
Thomas, said 2020 will be the year of
Industry 4.0. "The future of manufacturing is in smart factories, and 5G is
making that possible," he said, adding
that 5G provides the speed, flexibility
and reliability factories need to use
artificial intelligence (AI) and the
internet of things.
"Technology is consistently advancing, but every few years, a technology
comes along that is truly disruptive in
the best possible sense. We're currently
in such an era, and it's allowing us to
leapfrog," Uphoff said. "Now we can
really start to innovate and do some
incredibly interesting things."

While 5G is expected to help all
industries, IHS Markit's latest report on
the technology said manufacturing will
benefit not only from the production
of 5G components, infrastructure and
devices, but also from the connectivity
5G will provide. That connectivity will
enable collaboration between devices,
such as automated guided vehicles,
handheld technology and robotic arms,
as well as improved monitoring.
"5G can also enable more flexible
production techniques, more rapid
time to market with new products and
greater product customization," IHS
Markit reported.
Steve Koenig, vice president of
research for the Consumer Technology
Association, said manufacturing is an
exciting area for 5G. "5G's low latency,
