Leading the Industry Forward

e have all been affected by the drastic changes COVID-19 has brought to
our local communities as well as the global economy, and I am proud of the
ways we have come together as business owners, an industry and an Association to do our part providing critical resources for the country and our communities.
As I write this from New Jersey, we are still in a state of emergency. This is an area that
has been hit hard, and it feels like a ghost town. I am seeing some sense of normalcy
slowly starting to resume, and I know that is due to the work of those on the front lines
as well as in the background - not only in health care, but also in businesses nationwide.
I'm sure, like us, you've been working hard to do everything you can to provide
for your employees, help your companies and produce critical supplies. Behind the
scenes, ILMA has been working hard on our behalf under the leadership of ILMA
CEO Holly Alfano and her loyal staff: Martha, Brenda, Amber, Tim, Meg, Margaret
and, of course, ILMA's backbone, General Counsel Jeff, and his associate Matt.
Holly and I have weekly calls discussing everything from finances to ensuring our
Annual Meeting takes place in October. The Board and I are exceptionally proud of
the work ILMA's staff is doing to benefit our industry.
Just as the lockdowns were going into effect, ILMA wrote letters to the National
Governors Association and the U.S. Conference of Mayors, urging them to designate our industry as essential during the pandemic, with a positive outcome.
When our grease manufacturers encountered a problem getting much-needed
castor derivatives from India, which was experiencing a lockdown, to produce their
products, ILMA immediately wrote to the head of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Secretary of State and the director of the U.S. National Economic
Council, as well as the ambassador to the U.S. from India. These letters were quickly
responded to by the Commerce Department and the U.S. Embassy staff in New
Delhi, who got the ball rolling to raise awareness of the issue. As this goes to press,
the issue continues to evolve, but it is gratifying that ILMA's voice is being heard.
What's more, ILMA has put together an extensive list of resources related to the
COVID-19 epidemic on its website. It provides information on supply chain issues,
the Small Business Administration loans available through the Paycheck Protection
Program, workplace health and safety guidance, and more. The ILMA staff is updating these resources daily.
At the same time, ILMA's staff is working on and launching a new app (available
in the App Store and on Google Play), as well as updated, user-friendly communities that our committees are using. These resources will add value for our members.
Most importantly, we are moving forward with plans for the ILMA Annual Meeting, Oct. 24-27, at the iconic Boca Raton Resort & Club in Boca Raton, Florida.
We already have a terrific speaker lineup, and this year's theme, #EssentialILMA, is
particularly relevant right now. I hope you will plan to join us to celebrate the work we
do and to advance our industry with exceptional learning and networking opportunities. I look forward to seeing you there!
