components demand high-performance lubricants with oxidative and
hydrolytic stability. "Lubrication plays
a role whether it's protecting the equipment thermally or lessening wear," said
Dilk. "There are a lot of stress cycles on
these typically steel components."
Maintenance is complicated by the
distance of offshore facilities from
land and the sheer height of towers
occupying remote hilltops. Lubricants
must "provide a longevity and protection as much as possible in all types of
environments," said Dilk.
Synthetics constitute more than 80%
of lubricants sold in the wind power
market. Most are polyalphaolefins

(PAOs), and the majority are gear
oils. Synthetics offer high viscosity
index and high thermal oxidative
stability. BASF produces PAOs, well
established in the marketplace, and
polyalkylene glycols (PAGs), strong on
energy efficiency, said Jim Casey, global
key accounts at Fuels & Lubricants
Solutions, North America.

The bio-based estolide lubricants
developed by Biosynthetic Technologies are well suited to the demands

of wind power, said CEO Mark
Miller. "By utilizing a synthetic
product, we can extend the oil change
interval, which also is environmentally
responsible," he said. "You're not only
using a biodegradable product, which
will degrade if it seeps into the land or
water, but it also extends the oil life,
which means you're using less oil."
While the lower thermal stability
and environmental hazards of mineral oil are shortcomings for wind
power, it still has a place because it
takes additives and wets out surfaces
well, said Dilk. Kl├╝ber wind turbine
designs can incorporate coolers or
auxiliary equipment that controls
