NEW SPECIFICATIONS PROTECT ENGINES AGAINST LSPI
New ILSAC GF-6 and API SP specifications were launched this spring to answer
changes in passenger vehicle engine design. A key driver behind the development
of ILSAC GF-6 lubricants was protection against low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI).
Paul Hetherington, president of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication
Engineers, said that these oils have unique chemistry developed to prevent LSPI.
Changing the engine oil to an API SP or ILSAC GF-6 product can prevent severe
engine damage and allow the engine to run smoothly. "As with all specification
changes, the best thing that lubricant professionals dealing directly with customers
can do is keep them informed," said Hetherington.
NAM SCORES TAX VICTORY FOR MANUFACTURERS
A proposed rule by the U.S. Treasury Department would have effectively pushed
a new EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) standard up two years, significantly
affecting manufacturers' equipment purchases. The National Association of
Manufacturers (NAM), along with 80 other trade associations, said now is not the
time for the new standard and aggressively opposed that change. In late July, the
Treasury Department released its final rules - without that provision. NAM said
that it would be easier for manufacturers to invest in their business, their employees
and their communities because of the omission.
BUYERS SHIFT TOWARD ONLINE MARINE LUBRICANT PROCUREMENT
During the "Marine lubrication: Improving procurement through performance"
webinar hosted by Riviera Maritime Media, Bulugo Partnerships Director Grant
Norton said the coronavirus has "acted as a catalyst for change," speeding the
adoption and implementation of digitalization, information technology and
artificial intelligence. Sure enough, when polled, 50% of attendees responded that
they used electronic ordering to support marine lubricant procurement. During
that same webinar, Joseph Star, global offer advisor at ExxonMobil, said, "Digitalization is no longer an option; it has become a requirement."
WINGD PUBLISHES COMPREHENSIVE LUBRICATION GUIDE
To make cylinder oil usage requirements more transparent, WinGD has published
a guide that provides information on the specific usage conditions for all approved
cylinder oils for WinGD marine engines. The guide supplies the suitable
base-number range based on the sulfur content of bunker fuel, and then shows
which cylinder oils fall within this range. The document also highlights whether
each oil is approved for general or long-term use, or whether further stipulations
- such as a time limit or higher frequency of inspections - are required. Frank
Venter, WinGD project engineer, tribology fuels and lubricants, told Bunkerspot
magazine, "Cylinder oil is not just another consumable onboard - it's considered
an important engine component that ensures reliable operation."
