Despite these challenges, Witt echoed Christensen in noting
that one of the best things lubricant manufacturers can do
to foster an engaged, incentivized workforce is to maximize
communication. "Do your best to listen to your employees and
communicate regularly from the top," he advised. "The smallest
bit of communication or recognition can go a long way."
POSITIVELY PROACTIVE
For Quentin Adams, vice president of purchasing/human
resources for Texas Refinery Corp., the secret to employee
motivation and engagement has been a proactive approach to
creating a positive and uplifting work environment. It has been
baked into the company's culture from the very beginning.
Before the pandemic, the company had distributed
copies of a brief motivational book called Smile & Move by
Sam Parker to every employee. "The book is about caring
about those we connect with and helping to serve them
with a smile," Adams explained. "We had everyone read it,
and then departments discussed it. The idea is that you're
encouraging people to be 'smovers,' people who are smiling
and moving. It's been beneficial. It's changed a lot about
how employees treat their job and how they demonstrate
respect for one another. We have a lot of employees who are
going above and beyond."
To recognize those individuals, the company launched a
Smover of the Month campaign; supervisors nominate worthy
candidates, and the winner receives an hour of paid time off.
The Smile & Move initiative exemplifies the company's
investment in nurturing and supporting its workforce, regardless of circumstances. Because of their cultural preparedness,
employees were well-equipped to weather the fallout when
COVID-19 restrictions went into effect. "We've spaced everyone out," Adams said. "Each department disinfects and cleans
throughout the day. And we do temperature checks every day
as employees come through the door."
Even as they implement these safeguards, the company
has found a way to reduce employee anxiety and add an
element of fun. "Daily temp checks can be an added stress,"
Adams acknowledged. So, every Friday, the company turns
the temperature checks into a game called Guess Your Temp.
"The employee guesses their temperature, and, if they get
