makes sense, as Japanese automakers have already moved
toward recommending use of lower-viscosity engine oils.
Finally, there is the API SP standard, which may be
applied not only to oils meeting the ILSAC GF-6A and
GF-6B standards, but also to a range of other gasoline
engine oils that, by nature of their viscosity grade, cannot
meet the Sequence VIE or VIF fuel economy requirements
that are part of the ILSAC specifications. Oils licensed to
the API SP standard are eligible to display API SP in the
API service symbol "donut" and are backward-compatible
with API SN and earlier service category recommendations.
At this time, there are over 3,600 products licensed by
nearly 300 marketers in 26 countries.
The last reminder that I will leave is that up until April
30, 2021, oils licensed against the ILSAC GF-5 and GF-6A
standards will be permitted to display the starburst. After
this GF-5 phaseout period concludes, the starburst will no
longer be permitted for use on GF-5 oils.
The evidence is clear that there are already many API-licensed gasoline engine oil products in the marketplace. In

fact, I dug deep into the archives and discovered that, over
a similar period of time, the adoption of ILSAC GF-6A and
GF-6B has outpaced that of ILSAC GF-5, which went live
in October 2010, by over 142%.
This is all encouraging news in a time when the automotive
lubricants industry and its customers, frankly, need it most.
Marketers are clearly offering higher-quality oils and helping
end users prolong the lives of their engines during uncertain
times. And to witness these standards being embraced increasingly around the world is a testament to the hard work by the
oil marketers, additive companies and OEMs that developed
them. API remains happy to serve the lubricant marketers and
