Virtual Annual Meeting Wrapup Sponsored By

Annual Meeting. Ria Scheuren, vice president, global EHS
and product stewardship for Quaker Houghton and chair of
the SHERA committee, said there is increased pressure from
regulatory agencies and customers to go green.
Valentina Serra-Holm, Ph.D., president of the Union
of the European Lubricants Industry (UEIL), said UEIL
is working to increase the awareness of sustainability and
the need for best practices and provide practical guidance
to member companies while also leveraging the industry's
work. Currently, UEIL is working with the EU's Innovation
Department on a technical study. " We have been invited to
be part of the experts to explain the needs of our industry.

This is extremely important because it means we can have
a voice in shaping the requirements and explaining the
implications of certain requirements, " she said. " We have
prioritized the sustainability issue going forward. If we're not
part of the solution, we will be seen as part of the problem. "
During the session, the committee voted that SHERA
should begin reporting on sustainability issues going forward.

Day Two

Tuesday started with an update on ILMA's operations. The
day also included breakout sessions on artificial intelligence
(AI) and electric vehicles (EVs), a meeting on trends and a
meeting of the Metalworking Fluids (MWF) Committee.
Here are the highlights from day two.
AI Technologies Will Shape the Future
Industry 4.0, which is a subset of the Fourth Industrial
Revolution that focuses on the computerization of manufacturing, and AI are transforming manufacturing and will
have a significant impact on business in the next five to
10 years. Dave Dragon, president of Dragon Management
Consulting, said those companies that get started with AI
technologies early can move forward in a more practical and
informed way.
" I would say you need to develop an Industry 4.0 and AI
strategy, " Dragon said during his session, which was sponsored by Lubrication Engineers. " When you look at failed
opportunities in Industry 4.0, it is people who just didn't
jump into it and didn't have a strategy. "
Dragon advised organizations to ensure they have the right
infrastructure to handle the collection of the vast amounts of
data and information today's systems can and will generate.
" Companies typically don't have a really good process for
managing data, and that is something you need to look at, " he
said. " Data is the new gold. If you don't pay attention to data
today, these technologies won't work for you. "
Organizations should also examine their policies, as many
companies run on unwritten policies. " What is your tribal
knowledge? If you're adopting new technologies, people will
have to change the way they operate, " he said.
Dragon also advised attendees to develop an organizational structure that is resilient to change. " Your
organization is going to change with the adoption of
technologies, " he said. " How will you handle that? "
MWF Committee Discusses EPA Guidelines,
Global Regulations
ILMA's MWF Committee provided detailed information
on several issues, including isothiazolinones, chlorinated
paraffins and California's cobalt inhalation risk, during its
session at the annual meeting.
