EV Growth
OEMs are introducing or expanding
BEV commercialization efforts across
all vehicle classes, according to the
State of Sustainable Fleets report.
However, adoption rates vary by
market segment.
" Passenger car decision-making
criteria are very different from the
decision-making criteria for medium- or
heavy-duty vehicles, " said Marilyn Tarbet,
director of new business development

for Power Systems Research. " The
passenger might be doing it because
they're environmentally conscious.
There might also be someone who
wants a high-performance luxury car
with the very latest technology. "
Globally, automakers launched 143
new EVs - 105 BEVs and 38 plug-in
hybrid EVs - in 2019. They plan
to introduce around 450 additional
models by 2022, according to research
from McKinsey & Co.
Electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid
passenger car adoption is at about
7.5%, Tarbet said. " It sounds like
there is a lot on volume, but as a
percentage of the total, there is a lot of
room for growth, " she said.

The vast majority of BEVs in the
market today are used to transport
people, and transit and city buses have
higher adoption rates. " Transit buses
are not for profit, so governments and
municipalities can adopt as monies
become available, " said Chris Fisher,
an analyst covering trucks and buses
for Power Systems Research.
China is the furthest along with
electric-powered bus adoption, Fisher
said. " Almost half of all city and transit
buses are electric. Here in North
America, we're not nearly as far along,
but it is increasing, " he said. " We do
think government mandates will force
more electrification over the next
decade or so. "
Darryl Spencer, senior assistant vice
president, engineering at Dallas Area
Rapid Transit, said the fleet has seven
battery-electric buses. The majority of the
fleet - 99% - uses compressed natural
gas, or CNG. " We removed [the] last
diesel buses in early 2019, " he said.
In the medium- and heavy-duty
market, vehicles are a tool to generate
revenue. " Buyers consider the initial
cost of the vehicle, the long-term
service and maintenance and the
longevity of service, as well as if there
are technicians trained to service those
vehicles, " Tarbet said.
The ramp-up for electric trucks has
been slower than anticipated, but the
technology is gaining some ground
depending on the application. " We
continue to think that package delivery,
shorter runs and smaller trucks are the
first places where EV technology will be
adopted, " said Mike Roeth, executive
director of the North American Council for Freight Efficiency. " We do have
some electric trucks going into drayage
and yard spotters. Those are good areas
for first adopters. "
Tarbet said Class 4, 5 and 6 trucks
and forklifts and scissor lifts that
can recharge in their own facility are
excellent EV technology options.
