hat song has been stuck in my head as we begin planning what will be our
first in-person meeting in almost 20 months. I am pleased to announce
that ILMA will meet for ReEngage: Embrace the Change, June 2-4, at the
Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in Orlando, Florida.
As the vaccine rollout continues across the nation, it is time to get back to
business. On Saturday, March 13, I had my second dose of the Pfizer vaccine.
My fingers are crossed that all of you have been fortunate to be vaccinated as well
or have an appointment scheduled fairly soon. I must admit to feeling a bit like
Superwoman after I received the second dose. Some people have reported becoming emotional, with the feeling of an enormous weight being lifted. As more and
more roll up their sleeves to receive the vaccine, the cloud of COVID-19 that has
created so much uncertainty is starting to lift.
I have spoken with many members who shared their challenges during the
pandemic, including a big drop-off in demand, reduced manufacturing capacity
and workplace issues. But thankfully, many reported to me that they began rounding the corner during the last quarter of 2020 and were optimistic that the first
quarter of 2021 would bring them even closer to pre-pandemic volume.
The decision to resume in-person meetings was not one that ILMA's leadership
took lightly. We had planned to meet in California, but unfortunately, the state's
slow recovery and extended lockdowns made it impossible. So, we began looking
at locations likely to be fully open, with an abundance of direct flights and reasonable room rates. That made Orlando the obvious choice. We have met previously
at Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress, and the venue's expansive open lobby and vast
meeting space made this location the obvious choice.
ILMA's meetings have a culture based on personal relationships. Our meetings
attract the top businesspeople in our industry. And while Zoom and virtual
platforms helped to maintain relationships, they are a poor substitute for looking
a colleague in the eye and sitting down to talk business. And virtual platforms are
very challenging for those looking to develop new relationships. ILMA ReEngage:
will provide plenty of opportunities for face-to-face networking interactions, with
room for appropriate social distancing, of course.
In addition to reacquainting with colleagues, I hope you will take advantage of
our educational sessions. The sessions will examine our " new normal " and what
that means for business, explore industry trends and provide updates on the latest
regulatory actions. Check our website or the new ILMA app (have you downloaded it?) for information on our educational sessions.
It is time to get back to business. It's time to reacquaint, reunite and reengage.
I hope you will join us in Florida as we celebrate our industry and its resilience.
