RENTAL CAR SHORTAGE IMPACTS TRAVEL
As COVID-19 restrictions begin to lift and more people are getting vaccinated,
it looks like summer vacations are back on the table. For some people, though,
those vacation dreams may stall out. Across the country, travelers face high fees
at the car rental counter, and they are the lucky ones. Many rental car companies
have a shortage of cars, and booking is difficult. Autoweek reported that the big
names in car rentals have not yet recovered from the pandemic and have sold
off significant portions of their fleets. These shortages are expected to continue
through the summer months.
WASHINGTON STATE PASSES CLEAN CARS 2030
In early spring, the Washington state Legislature passed the Clean Cars 2030 bill.
If signed by the governor, it would be the country's most aggressive deadline for
ending sales of gasoline-powered cars. The sales ban would apply to model year
2030 or later passenger and light-duty vehicles. This bill is a move to prepare
utilities for the uptick in charging stations. It also starts the clock ticking on
developing a new tax system based on miles driven, as electric vehicle drivers do
not pay a gas tax. Rep. Nicole Macri, D-Seattle, told the Seattle Times, " We're not
taking away anybody's gas car. The point of this is to send a signal to the market,
and to the public, that change is coming. "
CHINESE GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES NEW EMISSION STANDARDS FOR
HEAVY-DUTY VEHICLES
After an initial hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chinese government
announced that its China VI emission standards that apply to heavy-duty diesel
vehicles would take effect July 1. These new standards are very similar to the Euro
6 standards and set more stringent testing limits. Phase two of the rollout will
reportedly include remote emission-monitoring system connection and better
engine oil performance. Vehicle emission inspection information and pollution
control technical information will be required before vehicles leave the factory or
enter the country.
BRAZIL'S LARGEST STEEL PRODUCER LAUNCHES GRAPHENE COMPANY
Gerdau, Brazil's largest steel producer, recently launched a new company called
Gerdau Graphene, which will develop and market products based on graphene
applications. The company claims that some of the carbon allotrope's benefits
are derived from its mechanical properties. Characteristics include reduced
weight and friction, more efficient lubrication, and higher thermal and electrical
conductivity. Headquartered in São Paulo and with a branch office in the U.S.,
the company plans to offer more technology to the construction, industrial and
automotive lubricants, rubber, thermoplastics, paints and sensors industries in
Brazil and countries across North America.
